Photo 1 | JST control room: An exciting project. Adrian Graf Domaschke from the Carnival crew and Rafael Paltian (JST, left) adapted the hardware and software components precisely to the tasks in the Fleet Operations Center. The question “Where do we store the around four dozen 55-inch displays on site - in amongst the conversion phase?” was just one of the many challenges that were successfully solved during the installation.
Photo 2 | JST Operations Center: Using intelligent software tools, the FOC team assesses thousands of sources and millions of data points from the cruise ships every day. The highly modern satellite-based monitoring system makes it possible, for example, to evaluate weather conditions in order to recommend optimized routes. Thanks to the digital analysis, potential for reducing CO₂ emissions in fuel and energy consumption can be defined.
Photo 3 | JST display technology: A high-tech control center of superlatives - both the JST TacticTable® and the impressive video wall not only provide an improved overview, they have also established themselves as real team players in the FOC.
Photo 4 | JST TacticTable®: The TacticTable has proven to be the perfect medium if many sources are required at the same time in order to gain an overview of a process. Example: the rerouting of ships. For this task, weather sources, timetables and nautical charts can be called up and used simultaneously.
Photo 5 | JST video wall technology: An overview shows the port of Miami, where another Carnival Maritime unit is stationed. Display technology with ultra-narrow frames ensures that the dividing lines in such BigPictures are barely noticeable to the viewer.
Photo 6 | JST MultiStreaming®: Fleet Operations Center employees can access all applications and sources in the control room also via the multifunctional situation table. This is made possible by integration into the JST MultiStreaming® KVM system.
Photo 7 | JST TacticTable®: Digital simulations for upcoming maneuvers or new routes: Intuitive gesture control makes handling the TacticTable child's play.
Photo 8 | JST MultiStreaming®: Control with MultiStreaming technology makes the performance options of the large screen wall even more diverse. In addition to the presentation of large overviews across several displays, so-called SplitViews are now also possible. Different applications can be displayed together on a single screen. Access and operation take place without delay in real time!
Photo 9 | OPAL X11®: A JST development that significantly enhances the operator's workplace: The OPAL X11® acoustic ceiling sail improves lighting and sound effects at the same time.
Photo 10 | JST AlarmLight: The various AlarmLight options with which the ceiling sail, the video wall and the control room consoles are equipped cannot be overlooked. Blue light signals: Everything is OK!
Photo 11 | JST CommandPad®: Small but powerful! The JST CommandPad® - here, in the fixed installation version, in the surface of the Stratos X11® control room console - reflects the intuitive myGUI® user interface. It provides the operator with continuous access to all applications in the control room infrastructure.
Photo 12 | JST monitor swivel arms: The workstation monitors are attached to the control room consoles with height-adjustable 3D swivel arms. They enable an optimum and individually adjustable viewing angle and viewing distance on all displays thanks to a parabolic arrangement.
Photo 13 | JST DisplayWall: Every space is put to good use - here: Storage compartments integrated into the cladding of the large display wall.
Photo 14 | JST Möbel: Two ultra-modern meeting rooms serve as so-called “Emergency Response Centers”. This is where, for example, the FOC colleagues from the on-call service come together for crisis meetings. Both rooms - each in different arrangements - are equipped with the AllMedia Conference Desk from JST.
Photo 15 | JST MultiStreaming®: The MultiStreaming technology is not only used to control the actual FOC. By integrating the crisis rooms into the KVM system, there is also direct access from there to all sources of the control center.
Photo 16 | JST DisplaySuit: A special advantage of the monitors in the meeting rooms: they have been integrated into so-called DisplaySuits, which make it possible to conveniently pull the individual screens forwards using a quick-out system - even during operation!
Photo 17 | JST Operator workstation: Set-back workstation in the FOC - colleagues who are not positioned directly in front of the video wall also have access to the control center applications thanks to JST MultiStreaming®.
Photo 18 | JST control room equipment: As in all rooms of the Fleet Operation Center, the equipment in the Directors Office is also state of the art: an ergonomic control room desk from the Stratos series with matching operator chair is just as much a part of it as the necessary technical equipment.
Photo 19 | JST control room workstations: The Stratos X3 consoles from JST are used in the rear area of the FOC. In terms of ergonomics and stability, the desks meet the specifications for “VDU work in control rooms”, but still stand out thanks to their “airier” design.
Photo 20 | JST control room technology: More than just a video wall. A door is integrated almost invisibly into the cladding of the display wall, leading into the heart of the control center: the technical room.
Photo 21 | JST KVM technology: Twice as secure! The technical components of the control room management system with JST MultiStreaming® and myGUI® are protected in the technical room not only against unauthorized access, but also against environmental influences. JST technology racks with glass doors on the front have been specially designed for use in heavy-duty applications.
Photo 22 | JST KVM Grabber: With the MultiStreaming Grabber, restrictions due to spatial distances are obsolete. The module allows all desired systems to be linked as an IP stream via the network. The grabber forwards signals to a switch in the network, which acts as a coupling element and outputs the data streams in the FOC according to the user's requirements.
Photo 23 | JST control room technology: Real-time monitoring for maximum safety and comfort for guests on the cruise ships of the AIDA fleet and its sister companies. The IT infrastructure in the technical room allows Adrian Graf Domaschke and his colleagues in the FOC to access millions of pieces of data on the constantly changing conditions at sea and in the ports.
Fleet Operations Center: New technologies are the basis for improved processes
We use them to discover mysterious longing places. Cruise ships take us to the most beautiful destinations in the world. Nobody wants to worry about safety and schedules during a trip. Nor do they need to. Because that’s exactly what the Carnival Maritime GmbH team, which has dropped anchor in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg as well as Miami, takes care of. In what is probably one of the most modern Fleet Operations Centers (FOC) in the world, the employees use planning expertise and innovative control room technology from JST to ensure the safety of passengers and crew on the world’s oceans.
They make up almost a third of the global cruise fleet. The more than 100 ships of AIDA Cruises and its sister companies have such illustrious names as AIDAcosma, Costa Smeralda, M/S Britannia or Queen Mary. Some of them offer space for more than 6,000 people. If there are delays or a major event awaits the arrivals when docking in the next port, the most beautiful time of the year quickly becomes a logistical challenge.

However, passengers on the floating vacation paradises are generally unaware of such obstacles. The superintendents of the FOC monitor and evaluate radar data, courses, speeds, positions and routes of the fleet day and night. For continuous communication with the ship’s crew, Carnival Maritime’s nautical experts in the high-tech control center in Hamburg have access to pioneering technologies from the JST control room specialists’ portfolio.
“Ensure that a plan B, C and D is immediately available”
“We have the best and most modern FOC here and can therefore offer an incredibly attractive workplace,” says Adrian Graf Domaschke (Senior Manager Nautical Operations & Fleet Operations Center). His credo: “Our goal is to be able to offer the safest and most beautiful vacation. All our colleagues have been at sea as officers or captains so that they can really evaluate and assess the situation on board. We are there to ensure that a plan B, C and D is immediately available in case of doubt. The FOC is one of the pillars of the structure required for this.
Unique look attracts a lot of media interest
With its huge video wall, ergonomic high-tech consoles and ultra-modern meeting rooms, the “Fleet Operations Center 2.0” attracted a great deal of media interest when it opened. However, it is not just the visual features that make this JST installation so unique, but in particular the technology behind it all. After the Jungmann team was responsible for the planning and installation of the first FOC in Hamburg a few years ago, Carnival Maritime also benefits from the know-how of the control room experts for the upgrade.
Greatest benefit is invisible at first glance
Technological progress is evident, for example, in the KVM system, JST MultiStreaming®, a network-based IP streaming solution. Adrian Graf Domaschke explains this in more detail: “We quickly realized that the new MultiStreaming product offers us significant advantages over the tried-and-tested, hardware-based MultiConsoling. There are the SplitScreens, for example. Our electronic nautical chart is not only available at the workstations, it can also be shared in our Emergency Response Center or we can work on it on the video wall across several monitors.”
Video wall becomes an indispensable tool
The experienced nautical engineer with a captain’s license particularly appreciates the flexibility of the new equipment: “The video wall displays are integrated into the work areas of each employee. They serve as an extension of their own workplace. If we get really deep into individual scenarios, we need ten to 15 sources at the same time – then every superintendent can use the video wall directly. That’s a huge advantage of the Jungmann system! We can expand our own workplace at any time. The video wall with all its possibilities is available as a fifth or sixth screen.”
JST TacticTable® delivers tangible advantages
Adrian Graf Domaschke is similarly positive about another technical highlight in the new FOC: the JST TacticTable®. The multifunctional situation table not only looks futuristic, it also provides tangible advantages for the control room crew. “The special thing about the TacticTable is the way we can work with each other. We actively solve questions together. It really is a different feeling and a different outcome. Initially, we weren’t really aware of the benefits, but the TacticTable has become extremely important in process development. Everyone can contribute, display own sources and work in the sources, so that in the end a complete overview for solving the problem is created.”
New options create improved processes
Over the past few years, the Hamburg cruise experts have gained extensive experience in crisis management for specific scenarios. Their requirements for equipping the new FOC were therefore clearly defined. For Senior Manager Graf Domaschke, one thing is certain: “If you want to invest in the future, „If you want to invest in the future, it makes sense to open up additional capabilities. And that’s what we have with the new technology. The optimizations create new, improved processes. We don’t run the risk of being subject to unwanted restrictions after just a short time.”
