Photo 5 | JST Ergonomics: Technology makes it possible - thanks to the use of the JST MultiConsoling® system, employees in the CFM control room can now flexibly switch any display to any desired monitor. Only one keyboard-mouse combination is needed for this.
Photo 6 | JST control room planning: Two large display walls - two construction phases. In the control room at Charité Campus Mitte, the video walls display the systems for maintaining the entire technical building equipment for the various clinic locations. By splitting the installation into two construction phases, it was possible to ensure unrestricted operation. Future expansions - such as a fourth site in the northeast of Berlin - have also already been taken into account.

Benefits include generous legroom and a particularly deep tabletop with lowered monitor placement surface.

Photo 10 | JST control room furniture: Both individual cabinet solutions and the cladding of the video wall were used in Berlin to create separate rooms that, for example, provide space for so-called "availability workstations" that can be used by additional employees or craftsmen.
Photo 11 | JST large-screen technology: More than just a video wall - the covering of the large-screen displays acts as a multifunctional solution that provides considerable storage space. In addition, the audio system was integrated there, which provides the acoustic alarm in case of malfunctions.

Particular advantage: The ultra-slim frames enable BigPictures, the display of an application across multiple screens simultaneously.
Photo 13 | JST large screen technology: Minimum, maximum or ideal? When it comes to the distance from the workstation to the large screen wall, important aspects need to be considered, which JST already takes into account during the planning phase.

All systems are switched and operated with just one keyboard and mouse.

Here, for example, the crucial hardware to install all the technology outside the control center via the JST MultiConsoling®: The MultiCenter provides ports to connect grabbers (computers) and multi-consoles to process signals in real time.
Control room secures the clinic operation behind the scenes
It is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe and can look back on a history of more than 300 years. Researching, healing, teaching – doctors and scientists at the top international level are employed by one of Berlin’s largest employers. Together with its subsidiaries, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin has almost 21,000 employees. This includes the employees of Charité CFM Facility Management GmbH, who work in the background to ensure that the huge hospital operation runs smoothly. In order to fulfill this requirement, CFM, in cooperation with the JST control room specialists, has built a control center that is technically and ergonomically designed to ensure the Charité’s competitiveness and quality standards.
“We make Charité possible” is CFM’s declared guiding principle. If you take a look at the fields of activity of the control room, it soon becomes clear how much truth there is in it: Heating, ventilation, drinking water, wastewater, electrical systems and elevators are just a small part of the huge range of tasks. They also include fire alarm systems and the coordination of disaster situations.
7.500 fault reports in a single day
Data from all the facilities of the three Berlin Charité campuses converge in the control room, where they add up to the incredible amount of 7.500 messages on average – per day! A number that no human eye can keep track of and classify in the time required to initiate suitable measures in the event of a malfunction.
Software takes over the monitoring in the background
This is where the JST PixelDetection® monitoring software comes into play. Thanks to predefined reference values, the system detects deviations and actively reports them to the operator. Marvin Volbert, who implemented CFM’s control room project as head of technical systems, comments: “PixelDetection® really makes sense with the large amount of fault messages we receive. There are applications that we don’t look at permanently, but we need to know that if there are deviating set points, an audible or visual alarm will come immediately. The software has allowed us to significantly improve our response time.”
New ergonomic quality created
But there are other obvious optimizations: The conversion of the control room, which was realized in two construction stages without any restrictions on ongoing hospital operations, creates a new ergonomic quality as a contribution to “Hospital 4.0”. It is worth taking a look at the former control center: An analog mosaic wall represented the medium-voltage network for the central campus. At the workstations, each system was given its own screen; with the result that up to eight displays were monitored per employee. Each operator used four mice and four keyboards for his tasks.

Consoles and screens significantly reduced
This work situation came to an end with MultiConsoling® technology from JST. As a real-time control center, the system enables the flexible display of all applications on the desired screens – independent of operating systems. After just the first few months with JST MultiConsoling® technology, Marvin Volbert can confirm: “We now flexibly switch on the systems that we want to see depending on the situation – with just one mouse and keyboard. Three screens at the workstation and the large-screen technology provide a perfect overview.”
Clinic operation benefits from technical options
The various options offered by the MultiConsoling® system in combination with the interactive myGUI® user interface are also appreciated by the hospital control room team. For example, selected applications can be switched on automatically at set intervals on a rotating basis. In the break room, there is also a screen including a so-called CommandPad®, which is used to access the applications of the control room via touch operation. “This means that our colleagues can keep an eye on all the important systems even during their break,” says Marvin Volbert.
Contemporary workplaces as an additional incentive
For the project manager, it is clear that the modernization has significantly improved the efficiency of the Charité control center and, looking to the future, has also prepared the way for upcoming expansions of the clinic’s operations. In addition, the modern workplaces are “an additional motivation for potential applicants” in terms of attracting new specialists, says Volbert.
